East Coast MPI

Philosophy

Our Philosophy is to provide our athletes with the most comprehensive evaluation and return to sport rehabilitation available. This is achieved by having a state of the art movement analysis facility and a passion to learn the most up to date research regarding athletic movements and to apply that knowledge when designing a program and working with our athletes.

Return to Sport Testing

When having the athlete perform ballistic and plyometric/return to sport movements no one is objectively watching them move. To be honest many physical therapists aren’t critically examining how the athlete is moving prior to progressing them onto ballistic movements. Most people think time is an accurate measure as when the athlete can return to these activities. Nothing could be more wrong.

One in five athletes will re-tear their operative or contra-lateral ACL because they weren’t properly rehabbed to perform sports related movements correctly. At best other programs get the athlete back to where they were prior to their initial injury. Since a majority of athletes become injured in a non-contact way, we all know that their prior level of ability was not good enough to prevent the injury in the first place.

East Coast MPI utilizes multiple levels of technology to determine strength, motor recruitment and movement patterns. We have the gold standard of return to sport testing equipment and knowledge.

All sports have an inherent risk of injury. East Coast MPI’s approach works to minimize that risk and improve the performance of Athlete.

Assessing the athletes’ strength using an isometric dynameter and comparing that data to age related norms, determining appropriate muscle recruitment with surface EMG and assessing the athletes’ ability to perform athletic movements properly by utilizing movement capture technology to help identify pathological/compensatory movements is the only way to objectively work to truly reduce the risk of re injury.

Return to sport training will improve the athletes’ ability to perform.

Individualized Sport Specific Training

East Coast MPI offers the most comprehensive evaluation of the athlete.  From here we develop and properly progress a program tailored to that individual athlete’s specific motor recruitment and strength deficits which are contributing to the athletes’ movement deficits. Only when the athlete shows the strength and neuromuscular ability is he or she progressed to higher level activities. Strength measurements are compared to age related norms to appropriately determine the level of specific muscle strength.  All the information gained through this comprehensive evaluation is then brought together to determine if the athlete is ready to be progressed. After appropriate strength has been achieved the program transitions into skill acquisition through neuromuscular re-education and sport specific training.

Assessing the athletes’ ability properly by utilizing Movement Capture technology to help identify pathological/compensatory movements is the only way to objectively work to truly reduce the risk of re injury.  As part of the athletes’ evaluation surface Electromyography (EMG) is utilized to identify proper sequencing and if the athlete is properly activating the muscle groups necessary to perform those movements. A comprehensive and properly progressed program is then tailored to that athlete’s specific activation and strength deficits which are contributing to the athletes’ movement deficits. Strength measurements obtained using a computerized Isometric Dynamometer.  These measurements then are compared to age related norms to appropriately determine the level of specific muscle strength. Only when the athlete shows the strength and neuromuscular ability is he or she progressed to higher level activities. Force Plates are used to measure the forces the athlete applies to the ground.  These measurements allow us to determine proper body mechanics, forces the athlete generates and power. All the information gained through this comprehensive evaluation is then brought together to determine if the athlete is ready to be progressed. After appropriate strength and motor recruitment has been achieved the program transitions into skill acquisition through neuromuscular re-education and sport specific training.

Injury Prevention Training is Performance Training.
